Nilfisk-Advance are taking steps to better understand and respond to the environmental, economic and social risks that climate change poses.
The first step towards managing carbon emissions is to measure them because in business what gets measured gets managed. In our attempts to educate in building energy saving design, dimensioning and operation, it was more and more obvious to us, that our efforts had to be positioned in a bigger picture. To do so, we have to get in to energy production and resources, as well as other areas of energy use.
When we were designing our new factory for high pressure washers in Nagykanizsa, we decided to leave behind the old mentality and to think in another way to lift up our infrastructure to the same level as our environmental thinking is now.
New production building
We decided to use sky light windows in the roof – which both supplies our workers with nice sunlight during the day, but also reduces the use of electric light significantly. The expectable energy saving is 40% only in the new building, with using the natural light and the local lighting on the lines will give us double lighting force. It gives a very good atmosphere for the workers too.
Sub assembly area
The old lighting system had been changed and adjusted according the usage, meaning that we are using darkness sensors everywhere to ensure the lowest energy consumption all over the factories. The expectable energy saving is 4000 kW in a year- 30% of the total energy usage in this building. The lighting system has been segregated according to production lines, so if there is no production – the light can be switched off.
Test room - Water recycling system
Our factory builds high pressure washer, and we use a lot of water during testing process, each machine uses around 15-30 liters/min. This amount of water can be re-used for test purpose after segregation of pollutants. We designed a water recycling unit, which will contain an oil and crud separator as well. This segregated dangerous material will be handled in accordance of ISO 14001.
The treated water will be recycled in the new factory, and just to compensate the water loss we will use the collected rain water – for test purpose and also for the toilet.
